The Vyatka land is famous for its ancient crafts which still have been existing and flourishing. They have their own features arising from the national character of Vyatichi, the historical development, way of life, natural materials available.
Nowadays many works of folk arts have lost their original value, being praized for their decorative qualities. E.g.: Dymkovo toys are not toys at all any more. They are used as ornaments to delight the eye with their joyful innocence and festivity. Many works of applied arts are used as souvenirs.
Vyatka is famous for embroidery, wood-carving, weaving, making clay toys. As things of everyday wear you can buy articles of fur, lace. Vyatka can boast of articles of excrescences on the roots of leaf-bearing trees, osier and straw, painted panels, matryoshkas, articles of birch bark, ceramics. Many of these articles combine the expressive with the functional. You can see them in museums, expositions, in shops as souvenirs, as objects of everyday use. Artists play up the aesthetic properties of the materials.
- plasticity of wood;
- flexibility of osier;
- admirable natural colour and texture of birch bark (bast).
People living along the Vyatka river knew the value of birch bark. They used this light material to make salt-cellars, bread boxes and cylindrical vessels called tuyas. The latter were used for storing sour cream, milk, beer, kvass. Such vessels remained cool even in hot weather. They are decorated with painted flowers and leaves. Ornamentation can be stamped. The designs of stamped ornaments are floral or geometrical.
Vyatka craftsmen also produce articles of wood. The plasticity of lime-tree or aspen-tree is a natural quality which is skillfully used by craftsmen to fashion boxes, panels, napkin-holders, pen-holders. These articles have a lacquered surface of light brown. The designs on them are made of grooves and cuts which form shapes of flowers, rosettes, snowflakes, leaves or some geometrical ornament. Cuts and grooves are left uncoloured in contrast with the deep tone of the polished wood. Some items are skillfully inlaid with straw. The design of straw is laid on with a needle.
The articles of wood and birch bark are marked by vivid national originality. It explains the unfading interest in this handicraft.
Flexibility of osier and straw is used for weaving bread-plates, wall panels, toys, boxes, napkins, furniture. A really unique craft is making articles ofexcrescencies on the roots of leaf-bearing trees: ashtrays, candle-sticks, boxes, cigarette-holders, pen-holders.
Vyatka has been known as one of the centres of embroidery and lace-making for a long time. Rich traditions made it possible for this female occupation to become a trade. There are a lot of legends about this craft. One of them says they began to weave (make) lace in the reign of Peter I. Apparently he got angry with somebody of his submits and exiled him to Vyatka province. That exile (convict) took his wife with him, who was a court lace-maker. It was that lace-maker who founded a workshop in Kukarka. Vyatka women turned out to be gifted and patient and later brought fame to this craft. Using white or coloured thread and bobbins they wove designs of unbelievable beauty. The traditions have been kept till nowadays.
Nowadays in our city there are individual lace-makers, artists and Kirov Emroidery and Lace Factory "Vosmoye marta". The latter combines embroidery, lace-making and sewing, producing original highly artistic articles. The firm produces smart women garments, table and bed-clothes richly decorated with lace and lace articles. | |
